Chief Judge Kevin Higgins of the Sparks Justice Court has announced that pursuant to Nevada Revised Statute 4.020, a new judicial department shall be placed on the ballot for the upcoming election cycle. The statute provides that as the population of a township increases, a new Justice of the Peace must be elected at the ensuing biennial election unless the position is specifically waived by the Court.
The Sparks Township has met the population threshold set forth in NRS 4.020. Based on recent statutory changes in the last legislative session that will require the Court to hold bail hearings seven days per week, every day of the year, the Court is no longer waiving the fourth judicial seat. The next official population certificate from the Governor’s Office is planned to be released by March 1.
Filing for the office of Department 4 shall begin on March 7, 2022 and close on March 18, 2022.
Parties to evictions must either use the current version of the Court's eviction forms or their documents and pleadings must fully comply with all the provisions of Assembly Bill 486 (see 2021-5 Administrative Order).
Sparks Justice Court is currently open to the public for in-person access. Since the Court is currently open, the Court will discontinue its practice of automatically streaming Court proceedings on the department YouTube channels.
