Public Administrator

Washoe County Public Administrator
Nicole Klitzke

The Washoe County Public Administrator's Office manages the estates of individuals who pass away in Washoe County without a qualified person willing or able to administer their affairs.  Before assuming responsibility, the office makes every effort to identify an appropriate individual to handle the estate.  If no one can be confirmed, the office steps in.

Other circumstances in which the Public Administrator may become involved include:

  • When the named executor or executrix of a Will fails to act.
  • When the Will designates the Public Administrator as executor.
  • When the Court appoints the Public Administrator to protect or administer an estate.

Key responsibilities of the Public Administrator's Office include securing and safeguarding property, locating and notifying heirs, identifying and securing financial assets, verifying and paying valid debts and expenses, addressing federal and state tax requirements, and distributing remaining assets as required by law.  By carrying out these duties, the office provides an essential public service, ensuring that the estates of unrepresented individuals are properly and responsibly administered.
