Providing Safe, Supportive, and Engaging Family Connections

When a child is removed from their home, visits with parents often become their most important opportunity to stay connected. Regular, positive interactions between children and their parents support reunification, reduce behavioral challenges, and improve emotional well-being. The Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) believes that family time should be meaningful, safe, and child-centered.

The Family Engagement Center (FEC) provides a welcoming environment where families can interact, play, and learn together while working toward reunification. It is Northern Nevada’s first facility designed specifically to create safe, engaging, and nurturing spaces for families.

How We Support Families and Children

Safe, Positive Environment: The center features open indoor and outdoor spaces, thoughtfully designed to be fun, age-appropriate, and conducive to healing and connection.

Facilitated Family Time: Parents and children can participate in facilitated activities or enjoy unstructured play. Frequent visits strengthen trust, improve behavior, and increase the likelihood of successful reunification.

Resources and Guideance: Our team supports families during visits, modeling positive interactions, helping navigate challenges, and connecting families to services that strengthen bonds.

A Place for Healing and Growth: The FEC provides families a safe, nurturing environment to explore, reconnect, and rebuild relationships. It promotes emotional growth, reconciliation, and long-lasting family connections..

Who Can Benefit

The FEC serves all families involved in the child welfare system. Families working toward reunification, maintaining parent-child connections, or needing structured support can access safe spaces, guided interactions, and tailored resources.

Connect, Grow, Heal

The FEC is a cornerstone of HSA’s mission to support children and families in Washoe County. Families, community partners, and volunteers all play a role in creating strong, lasting connections that benefit children now and into the future.
