Youth Development Programming

Juveniles referred to Washoe County Department of Juvenile Services for a status or delinquent offense may be enrolled in our Youth Development Program by the assigned Case Manager or Probation Officer. If you have any questions regarding this programming, please call 775-325-7913.

Anger Management Program

The Anger Management Program focuses on helping youth develop healthy emotional regulation skills. The program's primary objectives are to reduce the frequency and intensity of anger in youth who display chronic aggression and to teach practical self-control and coping strategies for managing anger when it occurs. Participants learn to identify triggers, recognize emotional cues, and apply calming techniques in real-time situations.

Eligibility: Youth ages 13-18
Program Length: Up to 12 hours of instruction
Changing Directions Program

The Changing Directions Program supports youth who are exhibiting high-risk behaviors. The curriculum emphasizes personal responsibility by teaching youth to distinguish between positive and negative choices, recognize prosocial peer influences, and understand the short- and long-term consequences of their decisions.

Eligibility: Youth ages 13-18
Program Length: 6-8 hours of instruction
D.R.I.V.E. Program

The DRIVE (Driving Responsibly Includes Vehicle Education) Program is designed for inexperienced teen drivers and focuses on developing responsible driving practices. Instruction covers safe vehicle operation, responsible decision-making behind the wheel, and the overall responsibilities associated with operating a motor vehicle. A referral from a Juvenile Traffic Commissioner is required for enrollment.  

Eligibility: Youth ages 16-18
Program Length: 3 hours of instruction
Early Anger Management Program

The Early Anger Management Program provides age-appropriate instruction similar to the standard Anger Management Program but tailored for younger youth. The program aims to reduce the frequency of anger in youth who demonstrate chronic aggression while teaching skills related to self-control, emotional awareness, trigger identification, and calming strategies.

Eligibility: Youth ages 10-13
Program Length: 2-4 hours of instruction
Early Intervention Program

The Early Intervention Program is designed to divert youth from further involvement in the juvenile justice system by addressing concerns early in the process. The program includes structured discussions with youth and their families regarding criminal charges, the impact of crime on victims and the community, and the consequences of continued involvement in the justice system. The curriculum is presented in four segments: Court Systems, Criminal Behavior, Levels of Crime, and Anger Issues. Instruction includes lectures and applicable video content.

The program is offered in English and Spanish, and parent or guardian participation is mandatory.

Eligibility: Youth ages 10-18
Program Length: 4 hours of instruction
Evening Reporting Program (ERP)

The Evening Reporting Program, offered in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, serves as a community-based alternative to detention without requiring a court order. ERP provides structured supervision during high-risk hours while allowing youth to remain in their homes and schools. The program is used as an informal sanction for youth on probation and for youth awaiting plea or dispositional hearings.

Eligibility: Youth ages 13-18

G.R.O.W.T.H. Program

The GROWTH (Growth in Relationships, Observation, Worth, Trust and Health) Program supports female youth in building social skills and strengthening personal and interpersonal relationships. The curriculum includes topics such as self-esteem, healthy relationships, sound decision-making, and body image, all designed to help participants improve their overall quality of life.

Eligibility: Female youth ages 14-18
Program Length: 6-8 hours of instruction
Multisystemic Therapy (MST)

Multisystemic Therapy is an evidence-based, intensive, in-home and community-based therapeutic program. MST identifies the factors contributing to delinquent behavior and works with youth, families, schools, and community partners to promote sustainable behavioral change aimed at eliminating delinquent behavior.

Substance Abuse Prevention Program

The Substance Abuse Prevention Program aims to reduce recidivism among youth charged with marijuana or alcohol-related offenses. The curriculum enhances motivation for change, teaches self-management and refusal skills, and provides information on the physical, emotional, and legal consequences of substance use. Instruction incorporates elements of Cognitive Behavioral Training and Motivational Enhancement Training.

Eligibility: Youth ages 13-18
Program Length: 6 hours of instruction
U-DRIVE Program

The U-DRIVE Program prepares youth to successfully complete the Nevada written test for an Instruction Permit or Driver's License. The curriculum is based on the Nevada Driver's Handbook and covers traffic laws, road signs, traffic signals, and defensive driving techniques.

Eligibility: Youth ages 14-18
Program Length: 6--8 hours of instruction
Victim Awareness Program

The Victim Awareness Program helps youth understand the impact of crime on victims and the community. The curriculum is divided into three segments-Property Crime, Drugs and Society, and Violent Crime-and provides participants with opportunities to develop empathy and understand the effects of harmful behavior. Instruction includes lectures and applicable video content.

Eligibility: Youth ages 13-18
Program Length: 6-8 hours of instruction
Youth Employment Program

The Youth Employment Program provides youth with an understanding of workplace expectations and helps them develop skills necessary for meaningful employment. The program includes classroom instruction as well as hands-on experience in areas such as landscaping, painting, and irrigation assembly. Priority enrollment is given to youth who owe monetary restitution. Program length varies and should be discussed with the assigned Probation Officer or Case Manager.
