Washoe County General Improvement Districts

Washoe County General Improvement Districts (GIDs) are special districts that provide a variety of municipal-type services, such as water, sewer, trash, recreation, and road maintenance, to unincorporated communities. GIDs are established under Nevada Revised Statute Chapter 318 and are governed by elected Boards of Trustees. They finance these services through property taxes, user fees, and other revenue sources, allowing for flexible infrastructure development and ongoing operation of facilities in areas that may not need a full range of municipal incorporation.

Authority & Legal Basis

The Verdi Television (TV) District is a general improvement district (GID) established under Nevada Revised Statutes: Chapter 318.  Governed by Washoe County, the Verdi TV District Board manages the maintenance and operation of the facility that re-transmits “over the air” television and radio programming to residents of the district. Regardless of their financial ability, those within range, with a reliable antenna and an unobstructed signal, can receive multiple television channels, providing local news, entertainment and information from the government, health agencies, and their local area, including emergency management notifications from local broadcast stations.  It operates under Nevada law applicable to special improvement/tax districts. The Verdi TV District is not a broadcasting facility or television repair service.

Membership

Verdi TV District is governed by a five-member board of trustees elected to four-year terms. Board positions are held by elected residents of the Verdi TV District. Trustees serve terms defined by election cycles, as outlined by the Washoe County Registrar of Voters or other election authority.
