Youth Suicide Prevention
Recognize, Respond, and Support
The Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) encourages parents, caregivers, educators, and community members to recognize the signs of emotional distress in children and take action to prevent suicide. Early awareness, open communication, and access to support are essential in keeping children safe and helping them navigate difficult emotions.
Key Steps to Prevent Child Suicide
C – Check In: Regularly check in with children about how they feel. Notice changes in mood, behavior, or friendships. Ask open questions like “How are you feeling today?” and listen without judgment.
A – Ask Directly: If you suspect a child is struggling, ask directly about thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Clear, compassionate questions like “Have you ever thought about hurting yourself?” do not increase risk—they open a path for support.
R – Respond & Support: Take all warning signs seriously. Provide reassurance, connect them with trusted adults, and help access mental health professionals, counselors, or crisis resources. Stay with the child if they are in immediate danger.
E – Engage Resources: Know where to get help. Call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in emergencies. Utilize school counselors, pediatricians, or community mental health programs for ongoing support.
Creating Safe Environments
Prevention extends beyond individual support. Schools, homes, and community spaces should promote emotional well-being, teach coping skills, and reduce stigma around mental health. This includes monitoring for bullying, providing opportunities for connection, and promoting inclusive, supportive environments for all children.
Community Commitment
HSA is dedicated to raising awareness about child suicide prevention and supporting families and caregivers in Washoe County. Through public education campaigns, training for adults who work with children, and partnerships with community organizations, HSA strives to equip the community with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent child suicide.
