Voters Experiencing Homelessness
If you’re experiencing housing issues in Washoe County, you still have the legal right to vote, even if you don’t have a traditional address. Nevada law says that lacking a permanent home does not stop you from registering or casting a ballot. Under NRS 293.486, if you live in a place without a formal street address, like a park, a tent site, or an encampment, you can describe that location in your voter registration application. Our office will use that description to place you in the correct voting precinct. This description is important for us to provide you the right ballot for your location.
When you register, you need to provide both a residence and a mailing address. The residence is where you actually sleep or stay. You can describe it using nearby street intersections, landmarks, or parcel information if there’s no specific address. You do not need a photo ID to vote in Nevada. However, first-time voters who register by mail without providing ID must show a document with their name and proof of residence the first time they vote.
