Become a Poll Worker in Washoe County

Election workers play an important role in ensuring elections are free, fair and secure. Washoe County relies on community members to staff vote centers and support voters during early voting and on Election Day. Being a poll worker is not only a civic duty but also a way to directly support democracy while earning extra income.

Poll workers are needed in several roles, from managers who oversee entire vote centers to greeters who welcome voters at the door. Other positions include intake specialists who check in voters, ballot clerks who handle mail ballots, and runners who transport essential election materials. Each role is crucial for making sure elections run smoothly and allowing every voter to cast a ballot with confidence.

 

Qualifications include

  • U.S. citizenship and registration to vote in Washoe County (Nevada law requires all poll workers be registered voters in Nevada)
  • Minimum age of 16 through the Student Program
  • Ability to work long hours on Election Day (about 14 hours or more)
  • Ability to set up equipment weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Reliable transportation and access to a regularly checked email account
  • Attendance at required training, which includes online and in-person sessions
  • A professional attitude and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Not being a candidate or related to a candidate

 

Compensation

Early voting

  • Manager: $18 an hour
  • Assistant manager: $17 an hour
  • Associate: $16 an hour

Election Day

  • Manager: $225
  • Assistant manager: $200
  • Associate: $175

Additional pay

  • $25 for training
  • $25 for Election Eve setup
  • Runners: $16 an hour plus mileage reimbursement and $5 a day if using a personal cellphone for election business
