Park Ranger Andy BrownLace up your hiking boots and come get outdoors with a Washoe County Park Ranger! Discover new trails and learn more about your local environment in various Washoe County parks and open space habitats.

If this sounds like fun, preregister below and let's hit the trail! Bring sun protection, a sturdy pair of shoes, a snack and a bottle of water, and perhaps even your favorite camera.

There will be a maximum of 20 attendees allowed for each hike, and registration opens approximately 30 days in advance. This program is FREE and all ages are welcome, but please leave pets at home.

Galena Creek Regional Park (South Entrance)- Nature Loop Trail

Join Washoe County Park Rangers on an autumn hiking adventure around the historic Galena Creek Regional Park as we explore the 1.2 mile Nature Trail and areas on the south side of Galena Creek, including Marilyn's Pond, the historic Galena Fish Hatchery and rustic Camp We-Ch-Me lodge on a journey immersed in the glorious colors of fall.

Know Before You Go: At nearly 3 miles total, this Fall Photo Hike is easy-medium in difficulty, with a variety of slopes and roughly 300 feet in elevation gain. As a reminder, it's best to bring a jacket, a sturdy pair of hiking boots, a bottle of water, a snack, and of course your favorite camera (but pack light!). Most trails are not stroller-friendly.

Meeting Location: South entrance parking lot, adjacent to the restrooms and trail kiosk - Galena Creek Regional Park, 18350 Mt. Rose Highway (above the NDOT station across from Douglas Fir Dr.) The hike will depart at 2:00pm and return at approximately 4:00pm.

Upper Thomas Creek Trail

This Fall Photo Hike will take us to one of the most picturesque trails in our area, the upper Thomas Creek Trail, which should be near it's prime for fall color! We'll explore the trail as it winds through stands of aspen to the upper creek bridge crossing, approximately 5.0 miles round-trip.

Know Before You Go: This out-and-back 5.0 mile hike is medium in difficulty, with approximately 500ft in elevation gain over 2.5 miles to the turn-back point. As a reminder, it's best to bring a jacket, a sturdy pair of hiking boots, a bottle of water, a snack, and of course your favorite camera (but pack light!). This trail is not stroller-friendly.

Meeting location: The paved USFS/WC trailhead on the north end of Timberline Road, next to the vault restrooms, which will be available. The hike will depart at 2:00pm, and return at approximate 4:00pm.

Bartley Ranch Regional Park - Ranch Loop Trail

This Fall Photo Hike will journey back in time to learn about the pioneering spirit of some of Reno's earliest settlers as well as some of the wildlife commonly spotted in the area. In addition to exploring the 2-mile Ranch Loop Trail, we'll pass by the Historic Huffaker School and sneak a peak at the historic ranch buildings to discuss some of the ranching heritage that has shaped the Truckee Meadows. The meeting location will be in front of the Flying B pavilion, near the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater. Restrooms will be available.

Know Before You Go: This 2.0 mile Fall Photo Hike is easy-medium in difficulty, making it ideal for most ages and abilities. As a reminder, it's best to bring a jacket, a sturdy pair of hiking boots, a bottle of water, a snack, and of course your favorite camera (but pack light!). Most trails are not stroller-friendly.

Meeting location: The meeting location will be in front of the Flying B pavilion, near the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater. Restrooms will be available. The hike will depart at 2:00pm and return at approximately 4:00pm.
