A jury has convicted a local man of Felony Domestic Battery and False Imprisonment following a 3-day trial. Scott Kanvick (dob 10/24/74) is expected to be sentenced in June. This is the second time the defendant has been convicted of a Felony Domestic Battery, and he also has two misdemeanor convictions for violating a domestic violence EPO in 2016 and one for violating a domestic violence EPO in 2015.

This case against Kanvick began in December of 2023 when an officer with the Reno Police Department responded to a report of a domestic battery. When the officer arrived on scene, he found the 51-year-old victim suffering from several facial injuries, including bruising and swelling around her eyes, her ear, and across her nose.

The victim told police she had been in a romantic relationship with Kanvick and that the night before, he had picked her up from work in his truck. The woman said the defendant was angry with her because he believed she was seeing someone else, and that while driving, he grabbed the lanyard from around her neck and pulled her toward him. At that point, Kanvick punched the woman in the face multiple times. The victim attempted to escape several times, but Kanvick wouldn’t allow her to leave, maintaining his hold on her lanyard and then her hair. Eventually, the woman was able to escape from the truck in a Reno neighborhood and hid in the bushes, where she waited for the defendant to leave.

During the trial, Deputy District Attorney Jocelyn Ostomel shared photographs of the victim’s injuries and highlighted the violent nature of the attack. The Honorable Judge Barry Breslow presided and will impose the sentence in June, when Kanvick could face up to 15 years if sentenced to the maximum.
