Man Sentenced in Attempted Murder Case

The man who walked into a local casino last year and shot his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, has been sentenced to 41 years in prison. Joshua Slater-King (dob 11/7/86) had previously plead guilty to Attempted Murder with the Use of a Firearm, Assault with the Use of a Firearm, Burglary While in Possession of a Firearm, and Discharging a Firearm Within a Structure. He will be eligible for parole after 12 years.
Last 4th of July, Slater-King went into the bar at the Bonanza Casino, where his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend were sitting. The defendant then pulled a gun out of his pocket and pistol-whipped the victim, which caused the gun to fire. Slater-King then tried to shoot the man; however, the gun was jammed. After clearing the round, he fired several more times, striking the victim in the leg once.
Officers with the Reno Police Department reviewed the casino’s surveillance footage, that showed Slater-King putting on a ski mask before entering the casino, and then shooting at the victim. RPD picked up the defendant that same evening as he was walking on Parr Blvd. Slater-King told officers that “I let my emotions get the best of me.”
Deputy District Attorney Hunter Heidrich argued for a lengthy prison sentence, saying this crime constituted a tear in the fabric in this community and had caused an extreme physical and emotional toll on the victim and all others who were on the crowded casino floor.
The Honorable Judge Egan Walker presided and imposed the sentence.
