Top headlines from the Board of County Commissioners meeting

image of five people with "meeting highlights" and Washoe County logoIn two separate actions today, the Board of County Commissioners approved funding to better serve those in need of mental health care while serving time in the Washoe County Jail. A $15 million grant from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services will enable the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office to continue its Jail Based Mental Health Program through June 2027. The original grant of $5.8 million was approved in April 2024, and today an additional $9.9 million was approved. 

Washoe County joins America250 celebration with monthly Historic Courthouse commemoration ceremonies beginning in January 2026

photo of the top of a courthouseJuly 4, 2026, marks the Nation’s semi quincentennial – or 250th anniversary – of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Beginning in January, the timeless columned entrance to the Washoe County Historic Courthouse will be open one day each month. Shortly after 8 a.m., Court will hold a Moment of Honor led by a local champion of democracy who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and present a local musical artist to perform a patriotic song. The champion will also be given the opportunity to lead a presentation on a selected historical figure – who may make a special appearance - significant to America’s 250 years of nationhood.

Washoe County offices will be closed for Thanksgiving holiday

Washoe County PhotoMost Washoe County offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27-28, for Thanksgiving and Family Day. Family Day is recognized as a Nevada state holiday and is always the day after Thanksgiving.
