Sustainability

In pursuit of Washoe County’s Mission Statement – “Working together regionally to provide and sustain a safe, secure, and healthy community” – the County launched our Sustainability Program in 2022 with the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions net-zero by 2050. These goals are highlighted in the County’s Fiscal Year 2024 Strategic Plan with Goal 2: Support a Thriving Community: NET ZERO: Plan interim steps to Net Zero by 2050 in both County operations and community-wide.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability can mean many things to many people:

According to the Environmental Protection Agency: “Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.”

Sustainability success is measured by the “triple bottom line” – ensuring our work benefits people and our economy in addition to the environment.

Our work toward sustainability directly aligns with Washoe County’s Mission Statement: “Working together regionally to provide and sustain a safe, secure and healthy community. Quality of life.” Sustainability also means the continuity and quality of county services and infrastructure, and wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars for long-term fiscal health.
