REGIONAL INFORMATION CENTER UPDATE – MAY 15
An additional COVID-19-releated death reported

Reno/Sparks, NV – The Regional Information Center is reporting an additional COVID-19-related death in Washoe County: A female in her 60s with underlying health conditions.
 
There are 46 COVID-19-related deaths in Washoe County.
 
In addition, there were 36 new cases of COVID-19 in Washoe County with seven recoveries.
 

  • Total COVID-19 cases in Washoe County: 1,190 (+36 from 5/14)
  • Deaths: 46 (+1)
  • Recoveries: 582 (+7)
  • Active cases: 562 (+28)
  • Currently hospitalized: 55 (+4)
  • Cases who have discharged from hospital: 103 (+0)

 
Hospital bed and ventilator information
According to the Nevada Hospital Association, in Washoe County as of May 14, 2020:
 

  • 67 percent of all staffed short-term, acute-care hospital beds are occupied (+2% since May 13)
  • 46 percent of the all Intensive Care Unit beds are occupied (+1%)
  • 15 percent of all ventilators are in use (-4%)

NOTE: Numbers are for all hospital patients in Washoe County and not just COVID-19 patients.

The COVID-19 tests may include non-Washoe County residents who were tested in Washoe County. The numbers are provided by the State of Nevada and include testing done in Washoe County via the drive-thru site at the Livestock Events Center and at area hospitals.

COVID-19 Washoe Joint Information Center (JIC) Transition
Adam Mayberry will step down as the Lead Public Information Officer for the JIC and return to his regular duties.  The JIC will transition to modified operations as we move into recovery and reopening phases.  Washoe County Communications Specialist Amy Ventetuolo will serve as the primary contact for the JIC moving forward and can be reached at 775.313.8582. She will work closely with the Scott Oxarart, Communications Manager with the Washoe County Health District who can address Health District related questions.  Scott can be reached at 775.276.1021.

The JIC will discontinue weekend updates, however, the COVID-19 Washoe Dashboard will be updated every day, to include weekends. The dashboard is time stamped each time it is updated.  Follow updates on Twitter at @COVID19Washoe.
 
4 youth test positive for COVID-19 at Kids Kottage foster care shelter
Kids Kottage foster care shelter has reported four youth have tested positive for COVID-19.  One youth is hospitalized due to underlying health condition and is in stable condition. The other three youth are being quarantined at Kids Kottage. All remaining youth at Kids Kottage tested negative for COVID-19. In addition, four staff at Kids Kottage have tested positive and are in non-work status and home caring for themselves. They will not return to work until they are medically cleared.
 
The State Health Department who licenses Kids Kottage has been involved to assist with providing best care protocols and guidance. The Department of Public and Behavioral Health, Office of Public Health Informatics and Epidemiology (OPHIE), has extended their contracted Epidemiologist to assist as well and has approved the COVID Response Plan developed by Kids Kottage and Washoe County Human Services Agency.
 
Health District, UNR to conduct study on prevalence of COVID-19 in Washoe County
The Washoe County Health District, in coordination with the University of Nevada, Reno, is conducting a study to help determine how prevalent COVID-19 is in Washoe County.
 
Over the weekend up to 1,181 households may receive a letter inviting their family to participate in an antibody study designed by WCHD and the University of Nevada, Reno, School of Community Health Sciences. The study uses a randomized sample frame to obtain a represented sample to participate in this study. If your household receives one of these letters and decides to participate, follow the instructions in the letter
 
The study is only for those who were selected at random. Residents cannot opt into this study.
 
By sampling residents in various geographic areas, the expectation is to gather a statistically significant data set that will help public health officials and the public determine effectively how many residents had COVID-19. The results are expected to be published in late June or early July.

COVID-19 Transición del Centro de Información Conjunta Washoe (JIC)
Adam Mayberry dejará de ser el Oficial Principal de Información Pública para el JIC y volverá a sus deberes regulares. El JIC pasará a operaciones modificadas a medida que avanzamos hacia las fases de recuperación y reapertura. 4 jóvenes dan positivo por COVID-19 en el albergue de crianza temporal Kids Kottage
El albergue de crianza temporal Kids Kottage ha informado que cuatro jóvenes dieron positivo a la prueba de COVID-19. Un joven está hospitalizado debido a una condición de salud subyacente y está en condición estable. Los otros tres jóvenes están en cuarentena en Kids Kottage. Todos los demás jóvenes  en Kids Kottage tuvieron resultados negativos a la prueba de COVID-19. Además, cuatro miembros del personal de Kids Kottage dieron positivo, no están trabajando y permanecen cuidándose en su hogar. No volverán a trabajar hasta que sean autorizados medicamente.
 
El Departamento de Salud del Estado, entidad que da la licencia a Kids Kottage ha participado para ayudar a proporcionar los mejores protocolos de atención y orientación. El Departamento de Salud Pública y del Comportamiento, Oficina de Informática y Epidemiología de Salud Pública (OPHIE, por sus siglas en inglés), también ha brindado su epidemiólogo contratado para ayudar y ha aprobado el Plan de Respuesta COVID desarrollado por Kids Kottage y la Agencia de Servicios Humanos del Condado de Washoe.
 
El Distrito de Salud y UNR realizarán un estudio sobre la prevalencia de COVID-19 en el Condado de Washoe
El Distrito de Salud del Condado de Washoe, en coordinación con la Universidad de Nevada, Reno, está llevando a cabo un estudio para ayudar a determinar la prevalencia de COVID-19 en el Condado de Washoe.
 
Durante el fin de semana, pueda que hasta 1,181 hogares reciban una carta invitando a su familia a participar en un estudio de anticuerpos diseñado por WCHD y la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Nevada, Reno. El estudio utiliza un marco de muestra aleatorio para obtener una muestra representada para participar en este estudio. Si su hogar recibe una de estas cartas y decide participar, siga las instrucciones en la carta
 
El estudio es solo para aquellos que fueron seleccionados al azar. Los residentes no pueden optar por este estudio.
 
Al tomar muestras de residentes en diversas áreas geográficas, la expectativa es reunir un conjunto de datos estadísticamente significativos que ayudará a los funcionarios de salud pública y al público a determinar efectivamente cuántos residentes tenían COVID-19. Se espera que los resultados se publiquen a fines de junio o principios de julio.
