Top three headlines from the Board of County Commissioners meeting
Commissioners approve final collective bargaining agreements, support senior transportation and more

Reno, Nev. July 9, 2019. The following report highlights several important agenda items from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting:

1. Commissioners approve last collective bargaining agreements for Washoe County employees. Commissioners approved the final three-year collective bargaining agreements for the remaining bargaining units in Washoe County. The following agreements have been approved:

• Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) – agreement includes a cost of living base wage increase of 3% for the first year effective July 1, 2019, and a 2.5% increase the second and third years.
• Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputies (WCSDA) – agreement includes a cost of living base wage increase of 2.5% each year for a three-year period effective July 1, 2019.
• Washoe County Sheriffs Supervisory Deputies Association (WCSSDA) – agreement includes a cost of living base wage increase 2.5% each year for a three-year period effective July 1, 2019.
• Undersheriff and Chief Deputy Sheriff – the Undersheriff and Chief Deputy Sheriffs are confidential employees not covered by a bargaining agreement. However, Commissioners have adopted the same salary increases and similar benefits to those provided for the WCSDA and WCSSDA. Commissioners once again approved a cost of living base wage increase of 2.5% each year for a three-year period effective July 1, 2019.

Recently, Commissioners also approved collective bargaining agreements for the Washoe County Nurses’ Association (WCNA), Washoe County Public Attorneys’ Association (WCPAA), Washoe County District Attorney’s Investigator Association (WCDAIA), Unclassified Management, Non-Represented Confidential employees, District Court employees, Justice Courts employees (excluding Justices of the Peace), Juvenile Services employees, Truckee River Flood Management Authority’s Executive Director and General Counsel. Today’s approval of the remaining bargaining unit agreements, completes all the cost of living adjustments for Washoe County employees for the next three years.

2. Transportation grant for rural area seniors of Washoe County approved. Commissioners approved a $29,000 agreement with the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) for the Non-Urbanized Paratransit program to provide transportation for Washoe County’s seniors and people with disabilities living in Gerlach and Incline Village. 

RTC has provided funding to Washoe County seniors and disabled individuals through transportation programs for Gerlach and Incline Village since 2005.

3. Commissioners approve final ordinance for cargo containers on private property. After today’s decision by County Commissioners, the ordinance approved today regarding cargo containers on private property has been updated to no longer require a permit for cargo containers used for residential storage.

After public input and staff research, Commissioners have voted to approve the code update, including no longer requiring a permit for a cargo container.
