Commissioners approve 20 early polling locations for Primary Election

Reno, Nev. May 8, 2018. The following report highlights several important agenda items from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting.

1. Board of County Commissioners accept early voting locations for upcoming Primary Election. The Washoe County Registrar of Voters Office presented Commissioners, the 2018 early voting locations for the June 12, Primary Election. The Registrar of Voters Office is anticipating nearly 50 percent of Washoe County’s registered voters will take advantage of early voting. During each election cycle, the Registrar of Voters Office seeks to provide a sufficient number of locations that will allow voters in each geographical area of the community to access a location near their home or place of work.

Commissioners approved the 2018 Early Voting Locations and Schedule including 20 locations throughout the county, with hours ranging from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday- Sunday.

2. Board of County Commissioners approve creation of special fund to account for revenue from legalized marijuana establishments. Local government is responsible for zoning, business licensing, and public safety associated with voter-approved legalized recreational and medical marijuana in Nevada. In an initial step of a multi-step process, Commissioners approved the creation of a Marijuana Establishment Fund. This will serve as a Special Revenue Fund to account for the quarterly license fee of 3 percent of a marijuana establishment’s gross revenue.

The use of these funds will be directed by the County Manager following guidance of the Board of County Commissioners. Planned for future meeting, the Board of County Commissioners will discuss how revenue from legalized marijuana will be expended. For more information, please visit www.washoecounty.us/mme.   

3. Board of County Commissioners approve lease agreements to support the new Incline Village Community Center. The new Incline Village Community Center is set to officially debut services to the public with an Open House event on May 18, 2018 and will have additional tenants with the approval of two lease agreements. The lease agreements with Tahoe Basin government entities and non-profits, will provide residents with additional local government services and support the long-term development of the center. The center is primarily focused on the senior population and is now open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-4 p.m. offering seniors a space to learn more about available services, socialize and obtain resources. The Incline Village Community Center is located next door to the Incline Village Library expanding the local campus in North Tahoe.

4. Street Pavement Repair Project approved. Each year, the Washoe County Community Services Department seeks to make needed repairs with pavement patches to area roads. Commissioners approved the 2018-2019 Street Cut Pavement Repair Project, which will apply 26,000 square feet of asphalt patches to identified areas. In addition, after a competitive bid process, the selected vendor that was also approved to make these repairs was awarded to R Construction in the amount of $243,815.

5. Commissioners approve grant to purchase equipment for Meals on Wheels Program. Commissioners accepted a $74,596 grant from the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division for the Older Americans Title III Program. Money from the grant will be used to purchase equipment for the Meals on Wheels Program, which prepares more than 376,000 meals a year for homebound seniors in Washoe County. The Meals on Wheels Program is possible through a partnership between Washoe County Human Services Agency Senior Services Division and Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada.
