Reno, Nevada. April 20, 2018. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District announces the end of the permitted spring burn season.

Residents were allowed to burn vegetation and ditches for vegetation management beginning in March, and that burn season ends April 22, 2018 at 2 p.m. The District will schedule additional opportunities using other methods for residents to dispose of green waste in the future.

“We are surrounded by heavy fuels that are drying out with the onset of warm weather,” Fire Chief Charles Moore said. “We appreciate our residents’ efforts to safeguard our community by ridding their properties of excess vegetation, and creating defensible space around their homes. We also thank Washoe County Air Quality for their cooperation to permit burning.”

May is Wildfire Awareness Month, and residents have multiple Junk the Juniper opportunities to dispose of landscape and yard debris, as well as other fun activities for the family. For more information about fire prevention, please visit the District’s website.

The District would also like to remind residents that with the onset of warm weather, people should expect increased river and stream flow resulting from snow melt, as well as very cold water temperatures which increase the threat of drowning. Please keep pets on leashes and use caution near water while these conditions exist.

Citizens that burn after the close of the permitted season are subject to fines.
