Reno, Nevada. Nov. 16, 2017. Truckee Meadows Fire continues a pilot effort aimed at providing Washoe County residents with safe and environmentally friendly alternatives to open pile burning this fall.

Residents have the opportunity to dispose of lawn waste and dead vegetation at multiple Truckee Meadows Fire Stations this Saturday, with the addition of the Volunteer Fire Station in Wadsworth. This project provides for environmentally friendly disposal of excess vegetation for residents who safeguard their property by maintaining defensible space around homes.

“We had an overwhelming response from the community during TMFPD’s October collection, taking in nearly 1,300 cubic yards of green waste or approximately 100-125 acres of community treated fuels,” Fire Chief Charlie Moore said. “Creating defensible space and removing dead vegetation is an important step for fire safety, and this pilot validates that our residents need a variety of options to safely dispose of their defensible space waste. I am proud that Truckee Meadows Fire is taking this first step to develop a robust Fuels Management Program.”

The TMFPD Defensible Space Waste Disposal Program is available to Washoe County residents with proof of residency. The collection sites will accept residential lawn waste and dead vegetation Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Examples of items that cannot be accepted include food, household garbage, construction materials, e-waste, appliances, tires, paint, furniture, batteries or any hazardous materials. Additional details on the program are available here.
