Thinning project underway at Regional Archery Facility
Washoe County and Nevada Division of Forestry hit the bullseye for healthier trees

Reno, Nev. Nov. 13, 2017. Washoe County Community Services Department and Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) are working together on a sanitation tree removal program at Washoe County’s Regional Archery Facility. Staff from Washoe County Parks and NDF have used blue marking paint to identify stressed, dying, and dead trees on approximately 60 acres for removal. In order to reduce tree competition, some healthy trees will also be removed to provide more available nutrients, water, and sunlight for the trees remaining, to maintain forest health. Juniper trees are the target of this removal with a goal of providing long-term stand health.
NDF will begin cutting and chipping the trees on site approximately November 13 and continue as weather permits, with all cutting estimated to be completed by Thanksgiving and chipping completed by mid-December. Chipping on site will not only save time but also provide some much needed erosion control. Funding for the project is from the NDF Forest Health Program from a United States Forest Service 2012 & 2013 Western Bark Beetle Grant that the NDF administers.
