Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Board of Fire Commission Meeting Highlights
TMFPD Board of Fire Commissioners proclaim May as Wildfire Awareness Month.

RENO, Nev. April 18, 2017.  The following report highlights significant agenda items from the Board of Fire Commissioners meeting.

Wildfire Awareness Month                                                                                                        
The Board of Fire Commissioners proclaimed May 2017 as Wildfire Awareness Month. This year’s theme “Wildfire! Prepare. Anticipate. Evacuate.” promotes awareness for residents of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District to prepare their homes, families and community for wildfire.  The District reminds residents to reduce the wildfire threat, anticipate and be prepared for possible evacuation, and to evacuate homes when advised.

“Last summer was a very active fire season, and we expect even heavier fuels this season,” said TMFPD Chief Charles Moore. “It is important for residents to clear fuel breaks around their homes, and to ensure crews have access and maneuverability for the best chance to defend homes threatened by fire. Please practice your evacuation plan to keep your family safe.”

Fire Mitigation Resources Approved                                                                                             
The Board approved a two-year interlocal agreement between the District and the State of Nevada through the Nevada Division of Forestry for resources, equipment and financial assistance in the mitigation of emergency fire incidents.

2017 Kid’s Fire Camp Funding Committed                                                                                             
Chief Moore requested funding to sponsor ten (10) youth for the 2017 Kid’s Fire Camp, as well as to approve administrative leave for employees who work the event. The event will run three days and two nights, June 13-15, with the purpose of giving kids hands-on experience and skills for water safety, back country survival, firefighting and rescue techniques, as well as helping campers build confidence. Commissioners Hartung, Berkbigler, Herman and Chair Lucey agreed to commit Commissions Special District Funds to see youth attend. “This camp is a great way to utilize our parks and showcase our Fire Protection District. I have every intention to continue to support this program,” says Chair Lucey.  See a video from last year’s kid camp here.

Promotions & New Employees                                                                                                 
Chief Moore welcomed newly hired Firefighter/Paramedic Geno Higman, and congratulated the recent promotions of Captain Mark Thyer and Fire Equipment Operator Chris McNaught.
