Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks announced today the conviction of a Washoe County man on Burglary, Grand Larceny and Destruction of Property charges stemming from a February theft of over $16,000 from a local bank’s automated teller machine. The District Attorney’s Office is also seeking habitual criminal status in the case.
Adam Tory McGregor, 43, from Washoe County, was convicted Wednesday evening of one count each of Burglary, Grand Larceny and Destroying or Injuring the Property of Another Valued at $5,000 or Greater after a two day trial that began on Tuesday. Based on this conviction and McGregor’s criminal history that includes as many as 14 prior felonies, he now faces sentencing as a habitual criminal.
The case began at approximately 7:00 am on February, 2015 when The Sparks Police Department responded to a report of a man attempting to break into an ATM machine located outside a bank on McCarran Blvd. McGregor was apprehended after a short foot pursuit where police located over $16,000 in $20 dollar bills in McGregor’s possession and in a cardboard box he brought to the scene. Further investigation revealed that McGregor had placed tables and ceiling tiles taken from a nearby business around the ATM in an effort to conceal the daylight hour crime and caused extensive damage to the bank’s property. At trial, McGregor admitted to the theft of the ATM, but claimed someone else had taken the tables and tiles, leaving the items for him to use as concealment.
McGregor’s conviction on the burglary, theft and property damage could carry a maximum sentence of 10 to 25 years in prison. If sentenced as a habitual criminal, McGregor could face life in prison without the possibility of parole, or life in prison with the possibility of parole with eligibility for parole beginning when a minimum of 10 years has been served, or for a definite term of 25 years with eligibility for parole beginning when a minimum of 10 years has been served.
