Essentials of Management Development

Prerequisites:  Supervisor Level or above or approved WC Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Meeting on Common Ground: Meeting on Common Ground is designed to highlight the importance of personal responsibility for living the Washoe County Values, implementing the Code of Conduct, the EEOP and Diversity in Action plans. Employees are encouraged to promote a shared and inclusive understanding of diversity. 4 hour class.

MGT - Defensible Hiring: The Defensible Hiring class is a must for any manager or supervisor who hires staff for Washoe County. As a hiring manager you need to know the importance of strategic & defensible hiring, Washoe County's 10-Step Defensible Hiring Process, how to develop and use behavior-based interviewing techniques, strategies for conducting productive interviews and how to write Declarations of Action.  7  hour class.

MGT - Legal Responsibilities of Supervision: Governance of Washoe County is based on Nevada Revised Statues and is governed by the Board of County Commissioners. The County Manager, appointed by the Board, administers all county operations in compliance with required laws, regulations and policies. This four-hour session will cover the legal foundation for and a review of a number of critical Washoe County policies that frame the way Washoe County employees do business, including FMLA, ADA, Internet, Substance Abuse and many others.  (Formerly titled MGT – Legal & Policy Issues.) 4 hour class.

MGT - Overview of Organizational Support: Learn about internal departments that support your work. Finance, Technology Services, Human Resources, Management Services, Manager`s Office, Public Works and Community Relations all offer services to help you do your job! (Formerly titled MGT – Administrative Processes & Tools.) 12 hour class.

MGT - Performance Management: Improvement & Discipline: Review the legal backdrop and collective bargaining language pertaining to formal progressive discipline, techniques for counseling employees regarding unsatisfactory performance and for developing performance improvement plans. While these techniques focus upon achieving positive results, they will also serve as a basis for determining when and how to use the formal progressive disciplinary process for an employee whose performance does not or cannot improve. (Formerly titled MGT – Legal & Policy Issues).  4 hour class.

MGT - Performance Management: Goals & Expectations:  Performance Management focuses on managing and evaluating performance, giving and receiving feedback, and motivation. Effective performance management is critical to the county, to departments and to individual employees. Performance Management knowledge and techniques will be provided. This interactive class offers supervisors the opportunity to practice skills to effectively manage performance. 7 hour class.

MGT - Performance Management: Coaching & Feedback: This course provides managers and supervisors with tools and information that they can use to successfully coach their employees to achieve performance goals. During the course, participants will review and have the opportunity to practice concrete strategies for providing performance feedback, training and developing employees, confronting poor performance, and maintaining employee commitment and engagement.  6 hour class.

MGT - Role of the Manager at Washoe County: These sessions will focus on identifying the skills of the supervisor and manager, current challenges, the difference between management and leadership and your responsibility as a member of the management team. 6 hour class.

Current Washoe County employees need to register for classes through the online Washoe County Learning Center accessed through the intranet, Inside Washoe.   Non-county employees should contact to register for classes. NOTE: Supervisor approval is required prior to registration.
